TikTok, the popular social media platform, has become a huge part in the lives of millions. An app centered around entertainment videos, has also created countless opportunities, jobs, and helped businesses grow. However, fear struck when a possible law to ban TikTok in the United States was announced. Making it an internationally recognized issue since over 135.79 milllion US citizens use the app. The news sparked fear among content creators and business owners who rely on the platform for their income, as well as millions of users who enjoy the app daily.
The idea of TikTok being banned has been relevant for several years. In 2020, during his presidency, Donald Trump tried to ban the app, since he claimed it was a national security threat due to its ties with China. However, his efforts to ban the app were deemed unsuccessful.
Years later, in 2024, the proposal to ban TikTok resurfaced, causing many to panic. Many users, especially content creators and small business owners, fear losing their source of income and primary connection with their audiences. Additionally, the app has also become a place for freedom of speech which many are concerned to have that taken away. Surprisingly, despite his previous efforts to ban the platform, Donald Trump joined the app for his presidential campaign, aiming to reach a younger audience.
However, Trump’s sudden change in opinion toward the app rose confusion and debates. Many began to question his switch in ideals, wondering if his support for TikTok was a genuine change of thought or a strategic move to gain popularity. And when in 2025, Congress passed a law banning TikTok due to national security concerns, fear grew even more. With the app ultimately going dark across the United States on January 19th. But, on his first day back in office on January 20, 2025, President Trump stopped the ban with an executive order, giving the app 75 more days to operate while discussions about the ban continued.
This quick update shocked people across the country. Some were relieved that their favorite social media platform was saved, but others wondered if Trump’s actions were part of a larger plan to win support. Many questioned if this was all part of a scheme to boost his image.
The situation has brought to light many competitive debates. Some are asking how the president could overrule a law passed by Congress, while others are questioning whether TikTok truly poses a security risk or if the ban was simply a tactic to highlight Trump as a hero.
